Excitement is building ahead of the debut of international cricket at ANZ Stadium with Australia set to meet India in an historic Twenty20 battle on Wednesday 1 February.
The momentous match was a highlight of Cricket Australia’s 2011/12 international cricket schedule released this week.
The game promises to thrill with a host of T20 stars, including Australian batting sensation David Warner and fellow power hitter Virender Sehwag of India, expected to light up the 82,000-seat venue.
The contest will be part of a wider Twenty20 cricket schedule at ANZ Stadium next summer with the Sydney Thunder set to call the venue home during the re-launched Big Bash League.
ANZ Stadium Managing Director, Daryl Kerry, said: “We’ve had our sights set on the 2011/12 summer of cricket for some time now and cannot wait for the historic debut of international cricket.
“Twenty20 has proven a hit, and with Australia set to do battle with cricket powerhouse India, the February 1 contest is sure to be a fantastic spectacle for sports fans.
“Add the new-look Big Bash League, and our newest home team, the Sydney Thunder, and we’re in for a thrilling summer.”
Cricket NSW Chief Executive, David Gilbert, added: “Next summer offers a great opportunity for all cricket fans in NSW to watch the Australian team take on the might of India.
“The first-ever International match at ANZ Stadium will be a thrill with two of the world’s best cricketing nations going head to head at the world-class venue.
“It will also be the long-awaited opportunity for fans in western Sydney to witness an international fixture on their doorstep.”
