WE’RE not just about big events, sport and entertainment.
The VenuesLive team at ANZ Stadium is continually striving to attain best practice in social and environmental spheres. We take environmental sustainability seriously and recognise the opportunity we have to make decisions that are genuinely good for society.
Huge amounts of waste are collected after each event at the Stadium. Crowds of more than 80,000 people pack in to the Stadium for major events . . . events like the NRL Grand Final, the Bledisloe Cup Test, Socceroos internationals, visits by English Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, or concerts featuring artists such as Adele, Ed Sheeran, AC/DC and U2.
In the wake of these events there can be more than 10 tonnes of rubbish to collect and dispose of post events. About 200 tonnes of waste are recycled each year at ANZ Stadium.
Reduce, reuse, recycle . . . it’s a mantra used across the Stadium business.
Out on the arena, tonnes of grass clippings and worn turf are recycled each year, often propping up fairways and greens at golf courses in Western Sydney.
The VenuesLive team strives to make strategic decisions in line with our corporate sustainability policies. This comes at a times when individuals, community organisations and governments throughout Australia are prioritising sustainability more and more as an essential aspect of any corporate or social policy.
VenuesLive has found that embracing environmentally sustainable business practices can have a number of significant benefits.
As a sustainable business, we find we are more innovative because we are constantly reviewing processes to find new solutions.
As an eco-conscious business, our employees are more invested in the business culture, which provides more fulfilling jobs. The focus on ensuring sustainability also builds a culture of accountability throughout the organisation.
At VenuesLive, we focus on living well and operating efficiently within our environment. We invite you to join us on the journey.
ANZ Stadium – a world-leading sustainable venue 20 years on
The Stadium is a model of green, functional, cost effective design and is still regarded as one of the most environmentally sustainable stadia in the world.
The International Olympic Committee wanted the Sydney Olympics to be the “Green Games”. Innovative environmentally sustainable measures that were introduced into the main stadium included recycling rainwater from the roof into underground storage tanks to irrigate the pitch and a range of passive design measures including ventilation and natural cooling/heating, an on-site gas fired co-generation system.
ANZ Stadium General Manager of Assets, Simon Davies explained: “We harvest rainwater from the main roof and store it in large tanks under the Stadium with a storage capacity of about 2 million litres.
“This water is used for irrigating the playing field and we regularly harvest 9 million litres a year (when it rains!).
“We also use recycled water for flushing toilets. The sewage from the stadium goes to the Sydney Olympic Park Water Reclamation and Management Scheme (WRAMS), gets treated and sent back in to the Stadium for flushing toilets.”
The Sydney 2000 Games were highly successful and still considered by many as the best Olympic Games in history. ANZ Stadium has provided a lasting legacy for NSW and helped to regenerate an industrial area of Sydney, becoming the centrepiece of a thriving community at Sydney Olympic Park in Greater Western Sydney.
